January 23 is John Hancock’s birthday and National Handwriting Day in the United States. In the digital age, handwriting is quickly becoming obsolete. I personally know young people who cannot read cursive. Several people and organizations are trying to promote and preserve manual handwriting. One of the most important is the annual Handwriting Contest sponsored by Pat Gladstone, the undisputed handwriting expert in the United States. The contest, however, is open internationally, and the 2016 winner is shown below. She is accepting submissions for 2017 contest until June 30 so there is plenty of time for you or your students to enter if you want to focus on handwriting. Handwriting Day is also sponsored by the American Association for Handwriting Analysts, which despite its name, is an international organization.
