May 2 is Teachers Day in Bhutan commemorating the birth of their third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck (2 May 1929 – 21 July 1972.) During his 20-year reign that ended in June 1972, King Wangchuck reorganized Bhutan society and government,

Among his many accomplishments, Wangchuck freed bonded laborers, established a legislative assembly, created a set of holistic laws covering all areas of Bhutan life. as well as a court system. In 1961, with assistance from India, he began his 1st Five Year Plan (FYP) in which he built km of roads, 108 schools, three hospitals, and 45 clinics.

In 1972, Bhutan joined the United Nations, as its 125th member.
