Teacher’s Day in China

September 10 is Teacher’s Day in China where I live. This is the fruit basket I received from Sias International University (along with many congratulations from my students.) Some believe this date was chosen because 9 (jiu), 10 (shi) is similar to the word “teacher” (教师 jiao shi.)

Many countries have a Teacher’s Day, usually commemorating a famous pedagogue from the area. In Colombia, for example, Teacher’s Day is May 15 marking the day San Juan Bautista de la Salle was proclaimed patron saint of teachers.

There is some movement in China to change Teacher’s Day to September 28, believed to the be birthday of Confucius.
