International Friendship Day

It is with mixed feelings I post July 30 as International Friendship Day. The day, not surprisingly, was originated by Joyce Hall, founder of Hallmark, and originally set for the first Sunday in August, the low-point of the selling season for holiday cards. It does however have some legitimacy.

Another version of the holiday’s origins was that Dr. Ramón Artemio Bracho, while dining with friends in Puerto Pinasco, Paraguay, proposed the idea of a World Friendship Crusade as an activist group to promote friendship worldwide.

The organization lobbied the United Nations for many years, until finally, on July 27, 2011, the General Assembly of the United Nations assigned this date to celebrate the International Friendship Day.

Not surprisingly World Friendship Day is celebrated most widely in Paraguay, but is also has a presence in India, Southeast Asia, and many parts of Latin America.

If you can read Spanish, you can read about it here.
