January 25 is National Police Day (1952) and Revolution Day (2011) in Egypt. The holiday commemorates the 50 police officers killed and more wounded on that day when they refused British demands to hand over weapons and evacuate the Ismaïlia Police Station.
Egyptian opposition groups choose this day to start mass protests in 2011, which turned into a massive popular revolution which swept across the country. This revolution is known as the Revolution of 25 January and resulted in President Hosni Mubarak stepping down from office.
