February 6 is Sámi National Day, an ethnic national commemorating the day in 1917 that the first Sámi Congress was held in Trondheim, Norway. This was the first time that the Norwegian and Swedish Sámi came together to find solutions for common problems.
The first time Sámi National Day was celebrated was in 1993, when the International Year of Indigenous People was proclaimed in Jokkmokk, Sweden by the United Nations.
Since then, the day has become increasingly popular. In Oslo, the bells in the the City Hall play the Sámi national anthem. Other places arrange festivities in the week around the Sámi National Day.
Through pure synchronicity, February 6 was also the day that the Sámi of the Kola Peninsula gathered to meet with Russian bureaucrats to debate and decide on issues of relevance to them. This did not influence the choice of the date as the Sámi People’s Day, as it was unknown to them at the time.
