January 26 is International Customs Day sponsored by the World Customs Organization and commemorating its establishment in 1953. In 1947 thirteen European countries established a study group to examine customs issues. This work led to the Convention establishing Customs Co-operation Council (CCC) and finally the World Customs Organization.
WCO is an independent intergovernmental body whose mission is to enhance effectiveness and efficiency of Customs administrations. Today it represents 180 national Customs administrations that process 98% of world trade. *“As the global centre of Customs expertise, it is the only international organization with competence in Customs matters and can rightly call itself the voice of the international customs community.”
