Birthday of Goya and Van Gogh

March 30 is the birthday in 1746 of Francisco Goya and in 1853 of Vincent Van Gogh.

Francisco Goya was born into a lower-middle class family in Fuendetodos, Aragon. He studied painting formally beginning at the age of 14 and became a highly successful painter in the Spanish court. However, in addition to the portraits of royalty by whom he was commissioned, he was conscious of abuses and identified with the suffering of humanity. Among his prodigious corpus are found not only paintings of the The Family of Charles IV, The Sacrifice to Pan, , and war scenes and heroes, but also executions, insane asylums, and strangulation.

Vincent Van Gogh was born March 30, 1853 into an upper-middle-class family. He also had a deep compassion for humanity and became a protestant missionary. In 1881 he took up painting. He loved to paint common people in their daily lives as in peasant laborers and Potato Eaters. While producing some of the greatest artistic masterpieces of all time, Van Gogh’s life was characterized by mental illness and poverty.

  1. Van Gogh painted peasants and Potatoe eaters only at the beginning of his career. Indeed, when you walk through the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam — owned by his family — his paintings are arranged chronologically. They’re at the beginning. As you progress, his painting and color palette change. At the end, he painted a field with birds, just two weeks before his death. I bought a print there to bring home. Several years ago, I visited Arles, France where he spent the last two years of his life.
