Independence Day in the United States

July 4 is Independence Day in the United States, the day in 1776 when our “Dear George” letter was published and sent to the King of England. The American Revolutionary War soon ensued. We finally won our independence on September 3, 1783.

Exactly 50 years later on July 4, 1826 both Thomas Jefferson, the principal writer of the Declaration of Independence, died at age 83 and John Adams, second president of the United States, died at age 90.
