War of the Worlds

The first radio broadcast of War of the Worlds was made on October 30, 1938.

The War of the Worlds is a science fiction novel written in 1898 by English author H. G. Wells. It is one of the first in the genre of invasion literature.

It was most memorably dramatized in a 1938 radio program that allegedly caused public panic among listeners who did not know the Martian invasion was fictional.

Although it is the stuff of urban legend, the scale of panic is disputed. It did, however, secure the career of the drama’s director, narrator, and actor, Orson Welles.

This photo of Orson Welles meeting with reporters in an effort to explain that no one connected with the War of the Worlds radio broadcast had any idea the show would cause panic is in the public domain by virtue of the fact that it was published prior to 1978 with no copyright.
