Guy Fawkes Night

November 5 is interesting for many reasons. First of all it is Guy Fawkes Night marking the downfall of the Gunpowder Plot of 5 November 1605, in which a number of Catholic conspirators including Guy Fawkes attempted to destroy the House of Parliament in London. Its celebration was compulsory by fiat in the United Kingdom until 1859, to commemorate the deliverance of the King of Great Britain.

Both Guy Fawkes and November 5 have become anarchistic icons.
